Hong Kong pt. 2

My alone (not lonely) days in Hong Kong was mostly spent with aimless strolling around the city, long coffee-breaks, good dinners, photographing, reading a book, sleeping (btw, I'm staying in the smallest hostel-room I've ever seen, it's the size of my bed in the hotel we staid in with my family. Hello backpackerlife! But it's clean and fresh and very central, so I'm more than happy!) and a teeny bit of shopping. (My backpack is absolutely completely full. So I bought a ring.) In addition to these loveliest ways of spending days in a new city I went to see my first horse race ever, to Happy Valley Racecourse (thanks Alessa for the tip!) - and it was loads of fun! The atmosphere was amazing (such a big place!), people all dressed up (perfect for people-sightseeing), drinking beer and being happy and when the horses were racing, the noise that came from the crowd was just.. well, you could feel the enthusiasm!

Must say that I (after having a bit of a reserved attitude) fell for the city today, when I found myself by the Central-Mid-levels escalators, that run between Des Voeux Road and Conduit Road. The escalators, one following the other, run on a narrow street, above the streetlevel between the buildings - you pass both apartments, shops, a bunch of cute cafés, bars, pubs and restaurants, massage-places and spas and, in between, you get a peek of the passing streets and alleys. I know understand why some compare Hong Kong to New York (and why one of the areas is called SoHo, South of Hollywood Road), and can easily say that this was my favourite area in Hong Kong. Spent the whole afternoon around there, first taking the escalator to the top and then slowly wandering around, following the escalators on the streetlevel, but turning to the small streets and alleys every now and then. Had a really cozy dinner at a organic vegetarian restaurant I found along the way, such a cute place and good food! And yes, I know, I should've had some chinese food since I'm here - but I've already tasted dim sum, and I'm getting really bored at rice, which I will have plenty the coming months anyway, so I thought I'd use my last chance for good, western food in a while. (And to totally contradict this justification, I had a risotto.. hmm)

Hong Kong

On the first day of the new year me and my family flew from Manado, via Singapore to Hong Kong. Before coming here, I had already heard a lot of the place, mostly good stuff, people loving the city - so I guess I had, have, a lot expectations. Haven't really decided yet what to think (I'll let you know), but I know my first impression - it is frickin' cold here! After living in Southeast Asia for five months, the 13-18°C they have here feels just way, way too cold. Though one reason might have been my lack of proper shoes or pants, and barely have one sweater. Not to say, there's a good side to not having to shower after every simple walk around the city.. Because that's what we've been doing, and some (a lot) of shopping, a ride on the tourist bus (love those things), looking at the city from The Peak (and taking jump-photos, It took a little practice, it's not as easy as one would think! hee) and eating great food, a lot of it. I'm especially loving the breakfastbuffé at the hotel (they have rye-bread! I'm in a happy place!). It's now my last chance to have it, my family went home yesterday and it's time to head back to backpacker-reality - without breakfastbuffés (so I'll spend the next couple of hours there so I won't have to eat for a week!).
